India

The Indian subcontinent is at a critical crossroads, facing interconnected challenges—climate change, food insecurity, economic inequality, and environmental degradation—that threaten the resilience of communities and markets.

At Forum, we are working alongside changemakers in India and the region to drive deep transitions in how we produce, consume, and value food and energy, while redefining the role of business in society.

By collaborating with businesses, philanthropies, and civil society, we are creating opportunities for systemic change. Through futures thinking and strategic partnerships, we are pushing boundaries to shape a more sustainable and equitable future, bringing together diverse stakeholders to address shared challenges and rethink the systems they influence.

Our focus:

Transitioning to a future-fit food system

We are working towards a food system that delivers safe, affordable, and nutritious food for all, while protecting ecosystems and securing sustainable livelihoods for farmers. This means:

  • Building a shared understanding of the systemic enablers and barriers to scaling agroecological practices.
  • Creating pathways to a low-carbon food system that supports farmers, restores the environment, and builds community resilience.
  • Helping food businesses and farmers adopt new ways of thinking and working to create lasting change.

Transitioning to a radically decarbonised and resilient energy system

We are enabling a socially just and ecologically positive shift to a renewable energy system that works for both people and the planet. This includes:

  • Scaling responsible RE by supporting investors, developers, policy makers, procurers and associations with the responsible business practices, investment mechanisms and an enabling policy landscape.
  • Driving just transitions in allied sectors and new solutions in decarbonisation, including embedding just transition in critical minerals.
  • Reimagining energy consumption to decouple growth from energy intensity through the power of Futures, visionary thinking and collaboration.

Redefining the role of business for a just and regenerative future

We are partnering with business leaders and change-makers to redefine how and why business operates ensuring long-term value for both people and the planet. This means:

  • Helping ambitious business leaders adopt a just and regenerative mindset.
  • Reconfiguring value chains to shift the focus from cost and efficiency to creating and distributing value more equitably within planetary boundaries.
  • Working with businesses to reimagine how and why we consume — enabling healthier, more sustainable lifestyles.
  • Helping businesses engage with key actors — from policymakers to investors — to shape an economy that rewards long-term, sustainable value creation.

Learn more about how we can work together

The future demands bold choices.  As South Asia faces climate challenges, economic shifts, and deep social change, whilst striving for nutrition and energy security and a leading role on the world stage, doing less harm is no longer enough.

At Forum for the Future, we partner with changemakers in India, Sri Lanka and the South Asia region to turn ambition into action. We bring futures thinking, systems change, and strategic collaboration to the table, helping partners uncover hidden risks and opportunities, align purpose with strategy, and build resilience. The path to a just and regenerative future is complex, but we are here to help businesses, civil society and financiers turn ambition into action."

The Five Capitals - a framework for sustainability

The Five Capitals Model provides a basis for understanding sustainability in terms of the economic concept of wealth creation or ‘capital’. Any organisation will use five types of capital to deliver its products or services. A sustainable organisation will maintain and where possible enhance these stocks of capital assets, rather than deplete or degrade them.
