This collaborative workstream is focused on developing a narrative that highlights the health benefits, as well as the environmental benefits of regenerative agriculture as a route to activating consumer and citizen support for regenerative agriculture in the UK and Europe.

Complementary to the narrative is a report from Forum for the Future and Waitrose, launched in 2025, outlining the connections between nature, food and health and the evolving evidence base supporting these complex interconnections. It includes a five point call to action: to grow the evidence base, center nutrition within the food system, engage consumers and citizens and continue to accelerate progress on the transition to regenerative agriculture.

The opportunity

Regenerative agriculture has moved beyond a niche practice to a position where many parts of the UK and global food and agriculture system are collaborating, incentivizing and advocating for goals and policies that can help make farming regeneratively the new normal.

For the final shift towards a new operating model for the food and agricultural system where regenerative agriculture is the “new normal”, a key lever for change will be supporting the culture, mindset and social values needed to make regenerative agriculture the go-to approach to producing food

Consumer understanding, support and purchasing of regeneratively grown produce is a critical element of that cultural shift, one that hasn’t yet had much exploration.

With health such a strong motivator of consumer choice and regenerative agriculture having the potential to deliver positive benefits for citizens and consumers in a range of ways, it holds great potential for activating consumer preference.

About the workstream

Connecting Health, Nutrition and Regenerative Agriculture: A Narrative is a collaborative workstream within the Climate and Health Coalition which aims to develop a shared narrative that highlights the health benefits, as well as the environmental benefits of regenerative agriculture as a route to activating consumer and citizen support for regenerative agriculture in the UK and Europe.

The workstream consists of 13 members from across the food, farming and nutrition space working together to build a credible, science based, shared narrative around regenerative agriculture through the compelling lens of health, which is increasingly becoming a key consumer purchase driver and an underexplored route to building public support for the transition to nature friendly farming.

We would love your input on the narrative: what works, what is missing, what do you think the key ingredients should be? Please read the narrative and share your thoughts using the links below.

The foundational report

The grounding for the workstream came from a project in 2025 between Waitrose, the Climate and Health Coalition and other collaborators, which built a shared understanding of the current evidence around the different connections between health, nutrition and regenerative agriculture, subsequently published in a BETA report (link below).

The report, 'Connecting Health, Nutrition and Regenerative Agriculture’, draws on desk research, interviews with a wide range of experts and insights from an in-person convening in November 2025. It outlines the current understanding of the multiple and complex connections between health, nutrition and regenerative agriculture and offers a call to action for food system actors to collaborate to accelerate progress on building the evidence base and the development of a supporting foundational narrative.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • A call-to-action for food systems actors to:

      • Goal 1: Build understanding and meaningful evidence of what makes a difference in nutrition and health from a production perspective

    • Goal 2: Improve ability to measure and share nutrient profiles – both at farm gate and for end products

    • Goal 3: Continue to drive and accelerate action within the food system to increase the amount of regeneratively farmed and minimally processed food available to consumers

    • Goal 4: Build a credible health narrative foundation on which to expand in the longer term

    • Goal 5: Catalyse a cultural shift or ‘wonder moment’ around regenerative agriculture

  • Summary of current understanding and evidence around the connections between health, nutrition and regenerative agriculture. Ranging from how nutrients flow between soil, plants, animals and humans; to the diversity of ingredients we consume and how they are processed; to more holistic interconnections such as reduced flooding, water quality and support for the ecosystems on which human life depends.

  • Summary of routes to measuring and reporting on nutritional profiles of ingredients and end products.

  • Summary of routes to communicating an emerging health narrative around regenerative agriculture

  • Risks and Challenges to navigate while building the narrative and evidence base.
