Background

Sarena leads on partnership and program development at the School of the System Change to widen the School’s global network of change makers working systemically.

Before joining the School in 2020, she was a researcher at Stanford University focused on the intersection of design thinking, strategic philanthropy and behavioral sciences and published The Philanthropy Toolkit. Trained as an educator, she is inspired to bring systems thinking to the philanthropic sector and transform funding to invest more systemically.

She worked for several years in different parts of Asia--Hong Kong, eastern Tibet, the Thai-Burma border, and Bangladesh in the nonprofit sector and higher education. While in Hong Kong, she advised Fortune 500 companies and private foundations to meet their philanthropic goals in Asia-Pacific and also worked in the international affairs office at the University of Hong Kong. She additionally worked as a research consultant on technical and vocational education policy and out-of-school youth engagement at UNESCO and Friends International in Cambodia.

She earned a Master of Education (Ed.M.) in International Education Policy from Harvard University and B.A. in International Development from UCLA.

What floats my boat outside of work?

I am an avid baker and a wheel potter. I enjoy making things from scratch--such as homemade pie on handmade bowls.

Scaling renewable energy offers affordable, reliable energy and fights climate change. However, unregulated deployment may bring environmental, social, and human rights issues. We collaborate with energy change actors to co-create a vision and principles for socially equitable and environmentally responsible renewable energy.

The Five Capitals - a framework for sustainability

The Five Capitals Model provides a basis for understanding sustainability in terms of the economic concept of wealth creation or ‘capital’. Any organisation will use five types of capital to deliver its products or services.
