Forum for the Future

Forum for the Future is a leading international sustainability non-profit based in Mumbai, Singapore, New York and London. For over 22 years we've been working in partnership with business, governments and civil society to accelerate the shirt toward a sustainable future.

Climate change, poverty, malnutrition, civic unrest: the world today is facing complex challenges because our fundamental systems are broken. We specialise in addressing critical global challenges by catalysing change in key systems, from food to apparelenergy to shipping. We do this by convening transformational collaborations to drive change, by partnering with organisations to help them lead by example, and by building a global community of pioneers and change makers.

Together we can reinvent the way the world works.

Introduction to the role

Our projects are designed to tackle major sustainability challenges such as climate change, sustainable nutrition and sustainable value chains. They are increasingly large scale, collaborative and international. The outcome is often uncertain and thus requires agile working methods and project management, an iterative process and a team who can switch between big picture and fine detail, operating in both modes.

Projects often require the design and facilitation of participative sessions, interactions and experiences that build the ability of individuals, groups, organisations and communities to realise systems change. Face to face collaboration and co-creation is crucial to effective change.  Creating conditions where everyone can contribute, where insights and tensions are surfaced and where new ideas can be generated is part of our role as convenor of people and communities. We also need to find ways to cultivate connections and continue to build communities online. Most learning – and lasting change - happens in practice and socially.

Your Mission

Your mission will be to accelerate sustainability impact through designing and implementing ambitious system change projects, predominantly in India.

You will join our  international delivery team of strategists and change designers focused on working with Forum’s external partners and multi-stakeholder coalitions to deliver transformational change.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the design, delivery and management of Forum’s flagship projects in India and beyond, which aim to deliver system change across climate change and energy, sustainable nutrition and sustainable value chains and livelihoods
    • Develop and fundraise for new projects that can deliver transformational outcomes in India and beyond
    • Lead facilitation and co-facilitation of workshops and senior level meetings
    • Lead project management of major change projects – ensuring they are effectively managed to time and budget for maximum impact, using Forum project management methodologies and tools
  • Work closely and nurture high-level relationships with Forum’s network of partner organisations and other key stakeholders, particularly in India
  • Ideally bring in content expertise in sustainable nutrition (including a focus on regenerative agriculture) and / or systems change, and a deep appreciation of the Indian context. For more information on what Forum means by sustainable nutrition, see https://www.forumforthefuture.org/Pages/Category/food
  • Support the effective development of the sustainable nutrition work theme (“Challenge Lab”) in India and Asia more broadly
  • Work across different project teams, being adaptive, self-motivated so as to support the delivery of a number of different projects.

We’d love to work with someone who:

  • Is passionate and knowledgeable about sustainability and systems / transformational change
  • Understands Forum’s mission, seeks to enact our values and can already see several ways your skills can help us get there
  • Has experience of working processes that contribute to systems change - which might include applied systems thinking, design, transformational learning, social innovation, collaboration, sustainability transitions, and Futures
  • Has experience working on food, nutrition and agriculture sustainability issues at a global level
  • Is passionate about other sustainability challenges and would also enjoy working on issues beyond the realm of sustainable nutrition
  • Has a curious and analytical mind, naturally making connections and understanding how things fit into the bigger picture.
  • Builds and nurtures strong stakeholder relationships and networks easily, from senior leaders of $bn businesses to NGO field workers to niche innovators
  • Enjoys working with a diverse set of people across different geographies
  • Values structure and is willing to create new ones, whilst bringing thinking to life through agile working processes and prototyping
  • Is a natural communicator and knows how to translate complex ideas and processes effectively to different types of audiences
  • Is a strong facilitator and speaker
  • Strong manager – of projects / programmes, time, budgets, people and project teams.
  • Is adaptive and resilient in the face of complexity and uncertainty
  • Can juggle working across a number of different projects and teams
  • Is effective at highly distributed and networked ways of working across multiple geographies, and adept at using digital platforms

… So in summary, we are looking for a colleague who:

  • enjoys working as part of a relatively new, small team
  • is happy to work in a start-up like environment
  • is enthusiastic about building Forum’s impact in a new market
  • is equally happy to work from a café or a corporate office, in person or remotely
  • is themselves in a suit or jeans and knows when to wear which, and
  • is fun loving and not easily phased
