Transforming the Future of Protein
The food system is at the nexus of our greatest global challenges of climate change and sustainable nutrition. With almost a billion people malnourished and similar number over-nourished, the food system requires radical transformation if we are to achieve our goals of ending hunger and protecting the planet from the impacts of climate change. Within the food system, the future of protein is central to the challenge: as populations and incomes grow, animal protein demand is set to increase dramatically. With this growth, business as usual is not an option in the protein system. A balanced future for protein is not just a question of how much we consume but how, and what, protein is produced. The Protein Challenge 2040 is taking a systemic approach to solving this complex challenge.

The Protein Challenge 2040 is the first global coalition of its kind, aiming to tackle the question: How do we provide 9 billion people with enough protein in a way that is healthy, affordable and good for the planet?

Convened and facilitated by Forum for the Future, the coalition is led by a unique group of diverse stakeholders, including international businesses Ahold Delhaize, Target and Waitrose; feed ingredient companies Evonik and Volac; food manufacturers Firmenich, The Hershey Company, Nestle and Quorn; together with organisations and NGOs WWF, Humane Society and The Sustainable Restaurant Association.

The Protein Summit 2018 will:

  • Bring together a broad range of stakeholders across the protein sector to work together to propel action toward a sustainable future for protein
  • Highlight the latest trends and developments in protein, and explore and determine what priorities the world needs to address to transform to a sustainable and healthy system
  • Reveal the cutting edge developments pioneered by ‘Protein Challenge’ partners, from animal feed to food service, protein policy to procurement, including key learnings on how to catalyse action at scale
  • Springboard shared action plans to transform the future of protein and grow the international reach of the Protein Challenge
