Intel launched a programme at the beginning of this year to sponsor a number of Intel Science and Technology Centers (ISTCs) at Universities. Nothing particularly interesting about that except that all research coming out of these centres has to be open source.
Quite an interesting move and IBM and HP have taken similar steps. "Consider the potential upsides if open source licenses became a standard requirement of university/industry research collaboration"
Many think that open source is vital to the success of sustainable technology as it allows a far faster dissemination of tech through society.
