Instead of the typical printed sign or white board, I've noticed an increasing number of chauffers using Ipads as the sign for passengers they are collecting from airports and train stations.
Yet another step on the road to less paper use.

I'm not at all convinced this is a more sustainable practice, I dont have stats on the amount of energy used whilst they stand and wait for each passenger and the impact that has compared to a printed sign, but my guess is that paper would be more sustainable.
The reason I chose this as a weak signal is I do think the impact increasing adoption of technology is critical to identifying and addressing sustainability challenges.
But can you tell me if this is a truly sustainable practice at all? Is there any research comparing the amount of energy and resources it takes to make an ipad . By this I mean all the components that go into making an ipad including all the metals and plastic and silicon that needs to be mined out of the ground and the poorly paid labour that goes into its manufacture. Not to mention energy to power the batteries and also natural resources to make the batteries. Also within two years the i-pad becomes redundant and thrown away to be replaced by another updated model.
