The temperature has dropped now, so those draughty windows of yours are really starting to get your goat. Did your office heating system break down again like last year, just as the first frost set in?

Comfort isn’t the only reason that we urgently need to tackle the issue of energy efficiency in buildings – there are carbon emissions to reduce and money to be saved, too.

Domestic buildings and office blocks are just the beginning of the list of places in need of a makeover. We must also ensure that commercial properties and hospitals are fit for purpose in a low energy, low waste world.

In the latest Special Edition of Green Futures, ‘Retro and Fit: Taking energy efficiency in buildings to scale’, we explore what this level of retrofit actually entails and showcase the best practice from around the globe. We question the barriers to change, assess the potential gains for businesses and landlords, and take a look at some of the top technologies available to assist in the transformations. We also ask how to strike the best balance between beauty and efficiency in heritage buildings, and what benefits the retrofit agenda could offer to urban biodiversity.

This Special Edition is out now, and you can download a PDF version for free from here. If you prefer to curl up on the sofa in the comfort of your newly refurbished home, we’ll send you a print copy for just £4.

With the Green Deal coming up in the UK, and other incentives and opportunities across the world, it’s a hot topic. Join the debate by posting a comment on this blog, or email the editorial team at: letters@greenfutures.org.uk
